At WSU one campus to close two others to open

Western Sydney U students are protesting today at what they say is management’s plan to close the Bankstown campus, (which is actually at Milperra) by 2020-21. The university is intent on expanding into the Bankstown CBD (in your actual Bankstown) where there are transport and services light-on at the existing location. WSU is also developing a teaching tower-block, further out at Liverpool, where the University of Wollongong is challenging WSU’s former monopoly.

According to National Union of Students president Sophie Johnston and Oliver Pollock from WSU’s Bankstown Student Campus Council, the university has ignored students’ attempts to “open a dialogue regarding the decision and future plans for the Bankstown and Liverpool CBD campuses.” The student leaders say they are concerned about mobility access, campus security and student services at the new locations.

However WSU management says nothing is decided for Milperra and the university, “continues to explore a range of options for future development. No decisions have been made in relation to the timing or preferred development option at this stage.”

But sooner or later it looks like Milperra will be out of education; “programs currently based on the Milperra site will transition to new locations within the university’s campus network in line with the opening of the CBD campus.”
