In CMM yesterday, I analysed international student nation-wide sector trends from the recently released March international student data. It is the first insight into performance post the borders opening.

Here’s what occurred state by state:

NEW SOUTH WALES

Overall commencers are up 1007 or 2.3 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 65.4 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 28 386 or 13.5 and 75.6 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 1383 or 6 per cent against 2021 with 78 per cent of the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 14 694 or 12.2 per cent against 2021 and are 82.5 per cent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are up 422 or 2.8 per cent against 2021 having 85.5 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 8628 or 11.8 per cent and are at 94.4 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are down 217 or 22.4 per cent against 2021 having 27.7 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 998 or 33.1 percent against 2021 and having 42.6 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 470 or 11.3 percent against 2021 having just 21.7 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 3063 or 33.7 percent against 2021 and have just 22.4 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers are down 111 or 7.2 per cent against 2021 having 21.7 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 1013 or 21.2 per cent against 2021 and have 29.5 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

VICTORIA

Overall commencers are up 418 or 21.1 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 59.2 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 34,177 or 19.2 and 68.4 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 1424 or 7.4 per cent against 2021 with 59.8 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 18,693 or 18.1 per cent against 2021 and are 66.5 percent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are down 557 or 4 per cent against 2021 having 91.7 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 10,322 or 17.1 per cent and are at 107.2 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are up 87 or 24.5 per cent against 2021 having 33 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 1706 or 37.3 percent against 2021 and having 37.3 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 452 or 16.4 percent against 2021 having 26.3 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 2774 or 39.9 percent against 2021 and have 20.1 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers are down 84 or 6.5 per cent against 2021 having 24.2 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 682 or 23.5 per cent against 2021 and have 27.3 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

QUEENSLAND

Overall commencers are down 295 or 1.6 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 56.8 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 12,422 or 16.3 and 68.7 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 679 or 8 per cent against 2021 with 73.9 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 5163 or 12.3 per cent against 2021 and are 81.1 percent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are down 312 or 5 per cent against 2021 having 81.1 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 4231 or 16 per cent and are at 90.2 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are down 217 or 24.9 per cent against 2021 having 32.7 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 852 or 31.5 percent against 2021 and having 44.6 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 382 or 18.3 percent against 2021 having 25.5 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 1854 or 41.4 percent against 2021 and have 17.9 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers are down 63 or 15 per cent against 2021 having 12.3 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 322 or 34.6 per cent against 2021 and have 13.5 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Overall commencers are up 899 or 12 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 83.1 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 3743 or 11.8 and 91.7 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 969 or 24.4 per cent against 2021 with 85 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 2520 or 12.6 per cent against 2021 and are 89.8 percent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are up 108 or 4.8 per cent against 2021 having 158.7 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 293 or 3.5 per cent and are at 166.4 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are down 76 or 14.4 per cent against 2021 having 50.5 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 353 or 24.1 percent against 2021 and having 50.2 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 19 or 4.8 percent against 2021 having 39.4 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 205 or 22.8 percent against 2021 and have 32.6 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers are down 83 or 22.4 per cent against 2021 having 29.4 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 372 or 36.2 per cent against 2021 and have 34.2 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Overall commencers are up 213 or 2.8 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 65 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 5201 or 16.7 and 73.7 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 979 or 29.4 per cent against 2021 with 75.3 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 2520 or 12.6 per cent against 2021 and are 89.8 percent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are down 313 or 10.5 per cent against 2021 having 87.8 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 1283 or 12.2 per cent and are at 101.4 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are down 57 or 31.8 per cent against 2021 having 39.7 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 173 or 32.2 percent against 2021 and having 51.2 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 388 or 45.5 percent against 2021 having 25.7 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 938 or 51.5 percent against 2021 and have 20.9 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers are down 8 or 6.1 per cent against 2021 having 13 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 139 or 44.4 per cent against 2021 and have 13.1 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

TASMANIA

Overall commencers are down 206 or 8.1 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 72.8 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 1342 or 12.9 per cent and 91 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 233 or 30.5 per cent against 2021 with 66.4 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 842 or 18.4 per cent against 2021 and are 67.2 percent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are down 446 or 27.5 per cent against 2021 having 103.1 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 482 or 8.7 per cent and are at 143.3 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are down 5 or 11.1 per cent against 2021 having 29.4 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 28 or 19.9 percent against 2021 and having 33.2 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 18 or 23.4 percent against 2021 having 22.3 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 27 or 24.8 percent against 2021 and have 20.9 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers grew 20 or 64.5 per cent against 2021 having 40.5 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are up 37 or 63.8 per cent against 2021 and have 62.9 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

Overall commencers are down 199 or 22.2 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 106.1 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 659 or 18.5 per cent and 123.3 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 59 or 19.5 per cent against 2021 with 107.1 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 149 or 8.3 per cent against 2021 and are 106.7 percent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are down 224 or 42.7 per cent against 2021 having 119.9 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 450 or 27.7 per cent and are at 205.4 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are down 1 or 6.3 per cent against 2021 having 100 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 10 or 13.3 percent against 2021 and having 72.2 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 23 or 67.6 percent against 2021 having 27.5 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 45 or 77.6 percent against 2021 and have 9.8 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers are down 10 or 47.6 per cent against 2021 having 68.8 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 5 or 20 per cent against 2021 and have 64.5 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ACT

Overall commencers grew 260 or 8.3 per cent against same time 2021 and are at 91.5 per cent of same time 2019. Enrolments are down 618 or 4.7 per cent and 87.8 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

Higher Education commencers grew 183 or 8.3 per cent against 2021 with 90.5 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 754 or 7.9 per cent against 2021 and are 30.1 percent of that at the same point in 2019.

VET commencers are up 105 or 12.7 per cent against 2021 having 161.4 per cent of the commencers at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are up 278 or 8.9 per cent and are at 207.1 per cent of same time 2019.

Schools commencers are up 1 or 4.2 per cent against 2021 having 37.9 per cent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 78 or 39.8 percent against 2021 and having 25.2 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.

ELICOS Visa commencers are down 12 or 25.5 per cent against 2021 having 18.2 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 36 or 35.3 percent against 2021 and have 11.8 per cent of at the same time in 2019.

Non-award commencers are down 17 or 65.7 per cent against 2021 having 5.5 percent of that at the same time in 2019. Enrolments are down 25 or 33.3 per cent against 2021 and have 11 per cent of that at the same time in 2019.
